Happy 2012! A week away from the office is a great way to refresh one’s creativity and clear the cobwebs. I have kept some really great articles, notes, and emails from the past year (or two or three) and made a real concerted effort to get through a lot of it. What I continue to discover is that I love to learn. After 22 years of full time work in the architectural profession with Brion– I still truly believe I have more to learn and that the best is yet to come! I cannot wait to learn more, create more, teach more, and be more. The same goes for Brion, who challenges us all to be on the cutting edge, and therefore this has become part of the fabric of our office. So, for the first blog entry of 2012, I want to explain how this thirst for knowledge translates throughout our firm and why, I believe, there is no better architectural studio to realize your dreams of a custom home – whether it be from the ground up or a remodel.

Clients that choose to work with our firm do so because our services are more comprehensive than what many other firms can offer. The quality of drawings and specifications are constantly updated to incorporate new technology and materials. We specialize in knowing everything possible about building a quality personal residence and finding out everything possible about the client to be sure that the house works for them. All of our designs are energy efficient because that is how we design period. We provide professional design services integrating all elements of the finished product: kitchen design, lighting design, theater design, landscape design, LEED, security systems, safe rooms, and specialized features created for highly individual needs. We are involved throughout the entire design, construction, and move-in process. Our client’s selection of their builder is made easily as we have attained a 30+ year working relationship with many local builders. We are only too pleased to refer and make introductions to those seasoned builders with the right experience for the project goals – or adeptly interview builders new to us if the client has a pre-existing relationship with a general contractor. Among the private home contractors in Orange County we are highly respected and regarded as the team player that makes the process of building a pleasure. This concept of a team is the root of a successful construction project and we take it seriously. We work to continuously educate ourselves and our entire staff on new construction techniques and materials. That, paired with Brion’s extensive knowledge from 30+ years of being on job sites, provides an extremely high level of comfort for our clients that we can interface on their behalf throughout the entire building process and beyond.

The Orange County Museum of Art tour was a grand success this year and we (Brion Jeannette Architecture) were pleased to have two owners selflessly surrender their homes for the day to raise money for OC art education (Read More) . Any attempt to keep art in the schools is an important and worthwhile endeavor as far as we are concerned. The tour drew attendees from all age groups and many OC and LA cities – art and architecture appreciation is certainly alive and well here. And, even though the tour ended up primarily contemporary in style, I believe that everyone enjoyed the variety, as all of the homes were quite distinct as well as the art. It was interesting to observe how some see the home only as a vehicle for the art and some don’t see the art because they are too busy looking at the architecture of the home. As an architect, I take the latter as a compliment, but as an art lover I seek to find the happy medium where the house can be “art” in and of itself, yet still provide a non-competing backdrop for the artworks that are chosen to grace its walls.

I spent the day at our remodel of a Mid-Century Modern home in Newport Beach. It surprised me at first how this style of home resonated with so many different people. But, as the day went on, I realized that while this is a style that is “new” to some of us, there are others that are quite nostalgic about it and, therefore, it appeals to a wide audience. In many cities in the US, a house built in the 60’s would not be of particular interest, but considering the age of Orange County – it fits in just perfectly as “historic preservation”. The simplicity of the style is comforting as is the connection between the living space and the outdoors. This connection comes from the structural concept that is the cornerstone of the Mid-Century Modern – the post and beam structure that enabled walls of glass to be used in ways that previously had not been possible. This created the possibility for many small outdoor courtyards and vignettes sprinkled around the house that create extensions of the indoor space – safe spots for kids to play, protected yards for pets to roam, and intimate areas for families to relax and entertain. Having these spaces to live – inside and out – is as important today as it was then. Thankfully those things haven’t changed.
